My choice for World Wonder is the Petra in Jordan. The Petra is an ancient city of homes and monuments that were carved into a huge stone mountain. There aren’t just monuments in Petra there are also tombs, baths, funerary, halls, temples, arched gateways and colonnaded streets.I picked this wonder because I had heard about an ancient city called Petra, and I wanted to learn more about it. I think that the Petra is amazing, and there is nothing else in the world that resembles it. Considering how old it is, and that it is still standing today, just amazes me!
The Petra’s nick name is “The Red Rose City”. Which it got because of the red stone buildings and cliffs. The red mountains almost look like scales on a fish. It is considered the most famous and gorgeous site in Jordan located South od the Dead Sea or about 262 km south of Amman and 133 km north of Aqaba. The Petra is filled with over 800 statues and monuments, but the most famous monument is called “The Treasury”. It is a carved face that glows in the dazzling sun. The face is said to be a famous ruler of the temples of Petra, but the name is not known. The Petra use to be home to Arabian people, Romans, and the Nabataea’s. In the year A.D 106 the Romans were actually the ones to conquer the Petra and they made it part of the Roman Empire.
There is so much history involved with all temples, monuments, and buildings in the Petra. I think it is special because you’re able to see and learn how people lived in B.C years, and even during the time of Christ! I would love to learn more about how people in Petra communicated, what they ate, and generally how they lived. I would also love to know who carved all the buildings and what tools they used to do it. I think the Petra is amazing, full of history, and so incredibly interesting.
